What is the content of Article 9, Chapter 2 of the Constitution, which is said to be the most controversial?

Article 9, Chapter 2 of the Japanese Constitution translates as follows:
"Aspiring sincerelv to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as a means of settling international disputes.
"In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained.
The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized."
The article, when interpreted straightforwardly, means that Japan can never possess any type of military forces.
However, the Self-Defense Forces came into existence in 1954, supported by conservatives who insisted that the right of self-defense is not implied in the article.
