When did the custom of flower viewing start?

The favorite flower of the Japanese is the cherry blossom.
While viewing cherry blossoms in full bloom, people enjoy eating and drinking.
It was in the Edo period that this custom, called hanami, became popular.
There are many places known for their beautiful cherry blossoms including Ueno Park in Tokvo, where people compete from early morning for spaces for their parties.
