What is higan?

Higan is a Buddhist event peculiar to Japan.
The three days before and after the vernal equinox are called spring higan and the three days before and after the autumnal equinox are called autumn higan.
Both higan are times of seasonal change.
On these occasions people visit their ancestors' graves and offer flowers and sweets called ohagi.
