Which is more popular in Japanese bedrooms, futon on tatami mats or Western beds?

Futon-users are in the majority.
According to a 1997 survey conducted by Clare, a textile company, the proportion of people who slept in beds was 25.1%.
Since 20 years ago the percentage of bed-users was only 6.8%, this represents a dramatic increase.
Among young people the proportion of bed-users is particularly high.
In Japan, beds were first used in hospitals and by the military.
They later became popular when Western-style hotels were built.
