What kinds of TV programs are popular in Japan?

The TV program lineup changes every three months, and programs with lower audience ratings disappear as new programs appear one after another.
Programs featuring hit songs were popular until the 80s, but the number of such programs decreased in the 90s.
Even the legendary annual all-star music program broadcast by NHK on New Year's Eve, the kohaku Utagassen, has lost much of its popularity.
TV programming seems to be undergoing a major shift because of the changing needs of the viewers.
Under such circumstances, sports broadcasting, news shows, "wide shows" featuring news and gossip about celebrities, quiz shows, and serial dramas are maintaining their popularity.
